Excess retirees

If “important” was the spread between how much attention something should be getting v. how much it is getting, then this is the most important chart that I’ve seen in a while.

A whole bunch of old people retired to close out the year, and many more than expected:

Excess retirees are becoming even more excessive

There are now 2.7M people “missing” from the workforce, due to unexpected retirement.

These figures are based on a model (form the St. Louis Fed), so take it for what it’s worth, but if it’s directionally correct, then it’s a very big deal.
